Why your candle might not be vegan
The first cool evening of fall is basically an invitation to light a candle. But here's what most labels won't tell you: plenty of candles aren't vegan at all.
Beeswax is an animal product. Stearic acid can come from beef tallow. Some fragrances and dyes are tested on animals or contain animal-derived ingredients. And a "natural" label guarantees none of this.
The good news is that great vegan candles are easy to find once you know what to check. Here's a quick guide, followed by five plant-based candles we're burning all season long.
What to look for in a vegan candle
1. Plant-based wax
The wax is the biggest factor. Look for one of these:
- Soy wax: affordable, widely available, and burns slower and cooler than paraffin. Ask whether the soy is non-GMO.
- Coconut wax: creamy, with an excellent scent throw. Often blended with soy or apricot wax for structure.
- Rapeseed (canola) wax: popular in Europe, often grown locally, with a clean, even burn.
- Apricot wax: a premium option, smooth and slow-burning. Usually sold as a blend.
Skip beeswax, which comes from bees. Be cautious with paraffin too. It's technically vegan, but it's a petroleum byproduct, so it doesn't fit most eco-conscious homes.
2. A clean wick
Choose cotton, hemp or wood wicks. Wood wicks add a soft crackle that's perfect for fall. Avoid metal-core wicks, and check that cotton wicks aren't primed with beeswax.
3. Honest fragrance
Essential oils are the cleanest scent source. Phthalate-free fragrance oils are a solid second choice. If a brand only says "fragrance," ask what's in it and whether it's tested on animals.
4. Animal-free additives and color
Stearic acid hardens wax and can be animal-derived unless labeled plant-based. Some dyes are animal-tested. Undyed or naturally tinted candles are the safest bet.
5. Certifications you can trust
Look for Leaping Bunny or PETA's cruelty-free logo, or a Certified Vegan mark. These save you from decoding every ingredient yourself.

6. Packaging that lasts
The best candles come in glass, ceramic or tin vessels you can reuse. Bonus points for recycled paper packaging and no plastic wrap.
5 vegan candles we love for fall
Every pick below uses plant-based wax, a clean wick and cruelty-free fragrance. Each one is available on Veganist.
1. The cozy classic
Warm pumpkin, cinnamon and a hint of clove, without the artificial bakery overload. It's the scent of a slow Sunday morning. Pour the coffee, light this, and stay in your sweater.
2. The fireside crackle
A wooden wick that crackles like a tiny fireplace, paired with cedarwood and a soft whisper of smoke. Ideal for reading nights and rainy evenings.
3. The orchard walk:
Crisp apple, pear and a little golden-leaf sweetness. It's bright enough for the kitchen and the living room, and lighter than the heavy spice candles of the season.
4. The forest reset:
Pure essential oils of fir, pine and a touch of eucalyptus. It's grounding and clean, like a hike without leaving the couch. A great pick if strong fragrance gives you headaches.
5. The gift-ready one
Creamy vanilla and chai spice in a ceramic vessel worth keeping after the last burn. It's an easy early holiday gift, or a treat for yourself.
How to get the most out of your vegan candle
Plant waxes burn softer than paraffin, so a little care goes a long way.
- Make the first burn count. Let the wax melt all the way to the edges, usually 2 to 3 hours. This prevents tunneling for the life of the candle.
- Trim the wick to about 6 mm (1/4 inch) before every burn. Trim wood wicks to about 3 mm (1/8 inch).
- Cap each burn at 4 hours. Then let the candle cool fully before relighting.
- Keep it away from drafts, which cause uneven melting and soot.
- Stop when 1 cm (1/2 inch) of wax remains, then clean and reuse the vessel for plants, pens or tealights.
Vegan candle FAQ
Are soy candles vegan?
Usually, yes. Soy wax is plant-based. Still check the wick, fragrance and additives, since stearic acid or a beeswax blend can sneak in.
Why isn't beeswax vegan?
Bees produce wax for their own hives, and harvesting it takes a resource from them. Vegans avoid all bee products for that reason.
Are vegan candles non-toxic?
Vegan and non-toxic aren't the same thing. For both, choose plant wax, a cotton or wood wick, and essential oils or phthalate-free fragrance.
Do vegan candles smell as strong?
Coconut and coconut-blend waxes have a strong scent throw. Pure soy is a little softer, which many people prefer for small rooms.
How long do vegan candles last?
Plant waxes burn slower than paraffin. A standard 8 oz (225 g) soy candle typically burns for 40 to 50 hours.
Light up fall, the kind way
A great candle should make your home feel warmer, not leave you second-guessing what's in it. Plant wax, a clean wick and honest fragrance are all it takes.
