Vegan Swaps for World Vegan Month: Easy Switches to Try This November

Vegan Swaps for World Vegan Month: Easy Switches to Try This November

Why November is the Perfect Month to Make a Swap

November is World Vegan Month, kicking off with World Vegan Day on November 1. It's a month-long invitation to try something new, whether you've been vegan for years or you're simply curious.

Here's the good news: going vegan doesn't have to mean overhauling your entire life overnight. The easiest, most sustainable way to live more compassionately is one swap at a time. Finish a bottle, replace it with a cruelty-free version. Run out of a cleaner, choose a plant-based one. Small switches add up fast.

At Veganist.com, every product we carry is vegan, so you never have to read the fine print or decode an ingredient list. Below are 15 easy vegan swaps across beauty, wellness, home, lifestyle and the kitchen. Pick one, pick five, or take on all 15 with our 30-day challenge at the end.

Beauty and Personal Care Swaps

Your bathroom shelf is one of the easiest places to start. Many conventional products hide animal-derived ingredients like beeswax, lanolin, carmine and collagen, and some brands still test on animals.

1. Conventional deodorant → vegan, aluminum-free deodorant

Plant-based deodorants use ingredients like arrowroot, coconut oil and essential oils to keep you fresh without animal ingredients or animal testing. Give your body a week or two to adjust and you may never go back. Want the full breakdown? Read our guide to vegan deodorants.

2. Beeswax lip balm → plant-wax lip balm

Most lip balms rely on beeswax. Vegan versions use candelilla or carnauba wax, plant waxes that lock in moisture just as well, and they're ideal for chilly November days.

3. Mainstream skincare → certified cruelty-free skincare

Look for moisturizers, serums and cleansers made without lanolin, squalene from shark liver or animal collagen. Plant-based alternatives like squalane from olives, hyaluronic acid and botanical oils deliver the same glow.

4. Bottled shampoo → vegan shampoo bars

Shampoo bars cut plastic waste and skip animal-derived ingredients like keratin and silk proteins. One bar can last as long as two or three bottles.

Wellness Swaps

Supplements and self-care products are full of hidden animal ingredients. Gelatin capsules, fish oil and dairy-based proteins are common culprits.

5. Gelatin capsules → plant-based capsules

Gelatin comes from animal bones and skin. Choose vitamins and supplements in vegetable cellulose capsules instead. Same nutrients, no animals.

6. Fish oil → algae-based omega-3

Fish get their omega-3s from algae in the first place. Algae oil skips the middleman and delivers DHA and EPA without the fishy aftertaste.

7. Whey protein → plant protein powder

Pea, rice, hemp and soy proteins blend easily into smoothies and oats. Many plant blends offer a complete amino acid profile.

8. Paraffin candles → soy or coconut wax candles

Cozy season calls for candles. Paraffin is petroleum-based and some candles use beeswax or stearic acid from animal fat. Soy and coconut wax burn cleaner and longer.

Home and Cleaning Swaps

A vegan home is about more than food. Many household products are tested on animals or contain animal-derived ingredients like tallow and lanolin.

9. Conventional cleaners → plant-based, cruelty-free cleaners

All-purpose sprays, dish soap and laundry detergent all come in plant-based, never-tested-on-animals formulas. They're gentler on your home and the planet.

10. Tallow-based soap → plant-oil soap

Many traditional bar soaps list "sodium tallowate," which is rendered animal fat. Swap for soaps made with olive, coconut or shea butter.

11. Wool and down bedding → plant-fiber bedding

As nights get colder, reach for organic cotton, bamboo, linen or recycled-fiber throws and duvets. They're just as warm and cozy, with no animals involved.

Lifestyle and Accessories Swaps

What you carry and wear counts too. These swaps are perfect for building a wardrobe that matches your values.

12. Leather → plant-based or recycled vegan leather

Wallets, bags and belts now come in materials made from cork, apple waste, cactus and recycled fibers. They're durable, stylish and cruelty-free.

13. Animal-hair makeup brushes → synthetic or bamboo brushes

Many makeup brushes use goat, squirrel or horse hair. Vegan brushes with synthetic bristles blend just as smoothly and are easier to clean.
